Meet the toddler versions of your favorite Disney Princesses (and a few princes) in the adorable Animators' Collection.

About the Disney Animators' Collection

The Disney Animators' Collection comes to us from the artists who brought our favorite Disney Princesses to the silver screen. The creation of this doll collection was overseen by two of Disney's top animators, Mark Henn and Glen Keane. They designed the dolls in this collection to reflect what the animated characters would look like as toddlers.

These dolls are cute and high in demand, and each one comes in a viewable collector's box decorated with sketches by the animators. Each doll is sold separately and comes with a plush embroidered friend. They have unique faces with detailed, thoughtful expressions. The dolls are intended for ages 3+, and they stand 16 inches tall. There are also some 5-inch mini versions.

Original Dolls in the Collection

When the Disney Animators' Collection first emerged, the line featured 10 Disney Princess dolls:

Pocahontas
Tiana
Belle
Mulan
Ariel
Rapunzel
Aurora
Snow White
Cinderella

Later Additions and Changes

Eventually, more character dolls were added to the Animators' Collection, and some of the originals got new outfits or looks. These include the following:

Pocahontas (Special Edition)
Belle (Yellow Dress)
Mini Dolls
Tinker Bell

We'll take a closer look at some of these later additions below.

Kristoff was the first male character to join the collection.

Elsa, Anna and Kristoff From Frozen

Queen Elsa and Princess Anna became part of the collection in 2014, and Disney paired these royal sisters with the loveable Kristoff. This marked the first time a male character was introduced to the line.

Three Disney Animators were involved in the design of these dolls: Bill Schwab, Tony Smeed and Jin Kim. Each of these animators worked on the Frozen movie: Schwab was the character design supervisor for the film, Smeed was the animator supervisor, and Kim was an integral part of bringing the characters to the big screen.

Kristoff: The First Boy Doll

I purchased Kristoff from the Disney Store in my area. He was a Christmas gift for my niece, who already had many Disney Animator dolls. She really did not need Elsa or Anna as she already had the My First Disney Princess versions of the two sisters—though, admittedly, I prefer the animators' versions of Anna and Elsa.

What is unique about Kristoff is that he is the first male doll introduced to the princess toddler line. His hair is sculpted plastic rather than synthetic like the female dolls.

I love how they reimagined toddler Kristoff, from his wistful face to the details of his embroidered collar. When I picked up the mountaineer, I did not realize he came with a plush figure like the rest of the dolls in the collection. I was excited to learn that Kristoff comes with his pal, Sven. The reindeer is plush with embroidered details.

Merida From Brave

The Disney Store produced a Princess Merida doll based on the film Brave. The doll's design was influenced by Matt Nolte, who worked as the art director on the film.

The Disney Animators' Merida doll is 16" tall and has exquisite facial features, like all of the dolls in the collection. Her big, expressive eyes are filled with imagination and humor.

Aladdin From Aladdin

Disney released an Aladdin doll as part of the Animators' Collection in 2015. This is the second male doll released in the collection, following Kristoff in 2014. Like Kristoff, the Aladdin doll features sculpted hair.

Maleficent From Sleeping Beauty and Ursula From The Little Mermaid

In 2019, Disney once again expanded the Animators' Collection with limited-edition Maleficent and Ursula dolls. These two villainous characters were redesigned to look like adorable, creepy toddlers. I hope they continue to add other villainous characters to the lineup. Who wouldn't want to see a toddler Queen of Hearts or a Mother Gothel?

Pocahontas (Special Edition) From Pocahontas

We have the original Animators' Collection Pocahontas at home, though now the doll's hair is not so sleek, and her necklace is missing. Pocahontas was later re-released in a special edition. The main difference between our doll and the new one is the doll's costume, which features an electronic light show that makes the leaves seem to fall along her dress.

There are a few smaller changes as well: The doll now has moccasins and a cape. She also has a braided headband with an attached feather.

Which Is Better: Original or Special Edition?

I wish the original version came with the headband and the shoes, but I am not sure the light-up dress would be enough to make me pick up this version. On the other hand, if you don't have this particular character yet and the doll is for a young child, then you cannot go wrong with the new edition.

Belle was originally released in her blue and white dress from the beginning of the movie, but that was later changed to her yellow gown.

Belle has undergone a costume change since the collection of dolls was first released. The adorable blue and white dress has been replaced with a gold organza dress, similar to the iconic gown Belle wore in the movie when dancing with the Beast.

Which Dress Is Better?

When the two dresses are compared, I prefer the demure blue and white one, which would seem to suit a younger Belle living with her inventor father. What do you think?

The mini doll collection includes Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, Aurora, Pocahontas, Ariel, Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Rapunzel, Tiana, Snow White, Tinkerbell, Merida and Mulan.

Mini Dolls

Another addition to the Animators' Collection is a mini doll set featuring some of the original dolls in a 5-inch size. This collection features 15 dolls previously released in the series. It does not include a likeness of the Aladdin doll, and the Belle mini doll is in her original blue and white dress.

Tinker Bell From Peter Pan

Tinker Bell was released in an original edition and a later special edition, much like Pocahontas. The video above shows a detailed unboxing of the special edition Tinker Bell and discusses how this doll was changed from the original (for one thing, she's a lot sparklier!).

Dolls Owned by My Family

My niece is lucky enough to own Snow White, Pocahontas, Ariel, Jasmine, Cinderella and Kristoff. Soon after Cinderella's arrival, the doll got covered in pixie dust as my niece decorated her for her marriage to Prince Charming (yes, Charming was also sparkling). Cinderella is her favorite doll and receives the most play. She enjoys chasing me (her aunt) around with Cinderella's plush friend, Jaq, because Auntie does not like mice.

We do not own Belle and Rapunzel. Instead, my niece has the My First Disney Princess versions of these dolls; however, she has been eyeing the blue-dress version of Belle from the Animators' Collection.

My Favorite Dolls in the Collection

One of my personal favorites is Snow White. Her short curls coupled with her expression are adorable. All of the Disney Princesses are beautiful, but if I had to choose just one, I would pick Mulan. I love her pigtails, detailed face and cute pink outfit with shoes. It could just be me, but she always seems sad to me, and I always want to give her a hug.

I have all 10! They just came out with a Merida one, but she's not an official "Animator's Collection" doll, since she's Pixar and not specifically Disney. She matches the set, however, because she's a 16" doll made in the same style.

@anonymous: I was going to try to fiddle around with patterns for American Girl dolls. The bodice will probably need taken in, but it's a start. Shoes shouldn't be hard to make from AG patterns either. They might need enlarged.

I would like to be able to buy extra clothes and especially shoes for these dolls. My granddaughters have Ariel and Rapunzel. Neither came with shoes. I'm looking at patterns that I can adjust to make clothes for them but they definitely need some shoes. Any ideas?

My daughter received the Ariel doll for Christmas. She LOVES this doll. It has become her favorite toy. I purchased a "My First Disney Princess" outfit from ToysRUs. It is a little snug but it does fit. I hope this helps all the little princesses that want to dress up their new doll.
